>> good evening. day of carnage and day of chaos. let's get right to latest on this breaking story. authorities tell us the bomber or bombers planted 5 devices but only 2 went off. 3 people are now dead including an 8-year-old boy. 144 are hurt. more than a dozen in critical condition. many victims suffered lower leg injuries and shrapnel wound. hospital reporting that they were are manufacturing ball bearings from the victims. placed in the did he advice to did maximum damage. one doctor tonight describes what he saw. >> seen a lot of shrapnel injuries and obviously it's upsetting. to see so many people come in so quickly with bad injuries like that. there have been 29 patients seen here total. 8 are in critical condition and many of those are very seriously ill. >>reporter: among the injured 12-year-old aaron hurt of martinez who suffered slan nell wounds to the leg and underwent surgery in boston he'll be there the next 7 to continue

eyewitnesses say the injured were piled open the sidewalk. severed limb littering the street. onlookers comforting each other as the violence and chaos engulfed them. >> i saw quite a few casualty coming back. i saw one guy with his legs gone at the knee knees. some ankle and feet missing. shrapnel wounds open people on the sides of the head. >>reporter: 2 bomb described by federal authorities as small explosive did he advises. there was no warning. no advance specific threat but paramedic, national guard and boston police were already on the scene for the marathon security and medical needs. they sped into action pronouncing 2 dead almost medley. carrying at least 80 injured that the race medical tent before being sent to 6 boston hospitals. police at the initial press conference warning downtown boston to stay calm but the street were not safe. >> recommending people stay

home. that if they are in hotel in the area that they return to their rooms. and that they don't go any place and congregate in large crowds. want to make sure we completely stabilize the situation. >>reporter: initial reports of other bomb in the area now discount by police. in an incident at the jfk library in boston originally connected to the explosion appears to be unrelated mechanical fire. this is abc news washington. >> senior what it house officials say tonight this deadly bombing is believed to be an act of terrorism. officials tell us that quote when multiple did he vases go off, that's an act of terroris terrorism. while president obama did not use the word terrorism when he addressed the nation earlier daring the message was clear. of. >> we still do not know who did this. or why. and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. but make no mistake. we will get to the bottom of this. we will find out who did this.

>> parents of saratoga high school student who committed suicide after police say she was sexually assaulted at alcohol fueled party spoke publicly for the first time today. the parents of audrey pots say they have no doubt their 15-year-old daughter committed suicide as direct result of the assault. police say a photo of the assault was

taken and then passed around. audrey hanged herself 8 days later. audrey mother says her daughter never told her what happened. last week police arrested 3 teenager boys for the attack. >> things that audrey did try to reach out to some of her friends. but she didn't reach out to an adult that knew how to handle the gravity of this situation. >> world was far better place when audrey was alive, far safer place if these young men are put behind bars. they are responsible for their action that includes the reason audrey noise longer with us. >>reporter: the pots say audrey was the victim of cyberbullying and today the school district released this statement our staff takes every alleges of bullying seriously. we have examined our records and found that audrey never sought counseling regarding bullying nor made any report of bullying. >> although audrey suicide was first attributed to photo of her attack going viral, that turns out not to be the case. it took a team of student report investigators uncover the truth. sergio has that

inside the house fired a gun. it hit the firefighters swiss phone which is a pager like device that is what you are looking at here. you have seen them probably on police and firefighters. bullet grazed him. he was not seriously hur hurt. the elderly man who fired the shot was taken away in an ambulance. he has not yet been charged. for the first time we hear today from the north bay paramedic who saved the young baseball player over the weekend. the 8-year-old was playing in a cal ripken baseball league game on saturday when pitch hit him in the chest. boy want few feet then collapsed. the paramedic husband and wife watching the game jumped from the stands and rushed to his aid. >> when we realized that his last few breath were gaps respiration heart had already stopped and then dan began to administer haven't las vegas and i began to do compression on him to keep the heart beating because it was clear he had no heart beat and not breathing. >>reporter: boy suffered cardiac arrest. still being treated at children hospital in oakland. expected to remain
